About Me
Hi! I am Dr. Katheryn, DVM, DACVIM-LA
Welcome to Foal Time Vet!
Welcome to Foal Time Vet! I am a veterinarian, and I specialize in equine internal medicine. That means I have advanced training and knowledge of internal diseases of horses. One of my main interests and focus is neonatology (a branch of medicine focused on treating and caring for newborn baby animals).
Childhood
I am originally from Sonoma, California, and spent most of my life growing up in Northern California. I grew up on a large ranch with my family. We had cattle and horses, and from a baby myself, I was caring for newborn calves and foals. From a child, I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian, and it was a predestined calling that I followed. The path was not easy or always straightforward.
Vet School
I went to vet school at Ross University, located in St. Kitts, West Indies. Going to school in another country made me learn a lot about myself. I did not only learn about veterinary medicine, but I experienced a different culture and way of living. It was hard to be so far away from my family, but it taught me to know my own strength, and it gave my family an excuse to vacation on a tropical island!
Internships & Residency
I finished my fourth year of vet school at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. Living in Lafayette was my first experience with the Midwest and a cold, snowy winter. The Midwest was home for another five years as I went on to complete two equine internships at the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana, IL, and the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN. I completed an equine internal medicine residency (three years) at Iowa State University, Ames, IA. I worked with over 100 foals per foaling season in Iowa, and I experienced and treated a variety of neonatal diseases. In my residency, I learned to trust myself and my instincts with each foal case. The Midwest will always have a special place in my heart. I will miss the beautiful green pastures and cornfields.
Passion & Drive
Now I get to experience a new part of the United States, the Southwest! Arizona, where I currently work. I believe in being a good steward of animals, and it gives me great honor to care for all of God’s creatures, especially foals! I also believe, “above all do no harm”, which is part of the veterinary code.
It is my hope that you enjoy this resource and that it provides you with useful information to better care for and understand foals. Be encouraged to go after your calling in life. What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
